In August and September I was artist-in-residence at the Kinderatelier (Youth Studio) in Renkum. I worked with the kids on the second iteration of my project "house/home", a concept I developed in 2017 to bring residents of a community together.
The kids built a village where everyone is welcome and can feel at home. First we made drawings of our dream houses, then we built small clay houses. Director Derck Zilverschoon of the brick yard Zilverschoon Randwijk on the other side on the River Rhine donated the clay and fired the houses. He also gave us a tour of the facilities and explained the process.
Then we assembled the village outside. Some houses are covered by the unfired remains of houses. These represent the lost dreams and homes of the "old" Renkum people and the newly immigrated ones. The unfired houses erode back to "dirt" showing the new, fired, permanent houses that will be their new homes.
